An STA qualification in the leisure industry will enable you to work within leisure centres and for operators and swim schools all around the world.

STA Level 2 Award in Teaching Swimming

The STA Award in Teaching Swimming is the perfect step to begin your exciting career as a swimming teacher and with no previous experience required, you can get started right away.

The STA Level 2 Award in Teaching Swimming will qualify you to teach non-swimmers through to, and including, improvers both adult and children. This OFQUAL regulated qualification, which is endorsed by CIMSPA to meet the professional standard in swimming teaching, will teach you the theory, as well as practical, to become a qualified swimming teacher.

The pre-requisites for this course are:

  • Be at least 16-years old
  • Hold current membership of STA (we can show you how to apply for this)

Please note, there is no Level 1 course for STA, so don’t worry if you are wondering if you need to complete this! The Level refers to where the course sits on the education framework, not the order in which the courses are taken.

STA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming

Progress on your teaching pathway with the STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming—the next step which meets CIMSPA’s employer-led swimming teacher professional standard.

The STA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming will qualify learners to teach advanced swimmers.

The qualification will expand expertise from the STA Level 2 Award in Teaching Swimming, so you can teach competitive strokes, survival and rescue skills, diving and competitive starts and turns; allowing the Swimming Teacher to teach non-swimmers through to advanced participants.

The pre-requisites for this course are:

STA Level 2 Award in Aquatic Teaching – Baby and Pre-School

If you would like to be a part of a baby’s first steps into water and help make their experience the best they can possibly have, then teaching babies and young children may be for you!


The STA Level 2 Baby and Pre-School will qualify you to teach baby, toddlers and pre-schoolers in an adult and child setting. This course is a stand-alone qualification and you do not need a swimming teacher’s qualification to attend. This regulated qualification will teach you the theory, as well as practical, to become a qualified BPS swimming teacher.

The pre-requisites for this course are:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Hold current membership of STA (we can show you how to apply for this)​
  • Hold a valid STA Safeguarding Certificate (not DBS) OR your STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Teaching, as safeguarding is a CPD within in this.

STA Level 2 Safety Award for Teachers

Essential lifesaving training for those aged 14 years plus involved in swimming teaching.

This one-day lifesaving training covers first aid, CPR and rescue skills in a fantastic OfQual regulated qualification written by the experts at STA and delivered by our trusted team.

From this course you will gain confidence and competency in:

  • Rescues, including spinal injuries.
  • CPR
  • First aid
  • Legislation and industry guidance.

This course is perfect for Club helpers, Aquatic helpers, Swimming Teachers, Coaches, Aqua Aerobics instructors and School Teachers responsible for supervising swimming. This course is often a pre-requisite for jobs in the aquatics industry.

The pre-requisites for this course are:

  • Be at least 14 years old
  • Be able to swim 25 metres (Learners who cannot swim 25 metres must be capable of wading, and effecting a rescue, in a pool with a depth no greater than chest height)
  • Be able to surface dive and recover an object from the deepest part of the pool

STA Level 2 Award in Aquatic Teaching – People with Disabilities

Swimming has amazing benefits for everyone, and even more so for those with disabilities. If you want to help people with disabilities experience swimming in a safe, supportive, inclusive, and fun environment, then is the course for you.

Swimming teaching is a rewarding vocation for people of all ages, teaching valuable life skills for in and around water, some participants in lessons may have physical or hidden disabilities which can make mainstream lessons less effective. The People with Disabilities qualification covers a range of disabilities equipping a leaner with the knowledge and skills to deliver these lessons.

The pre-requisites for this course are:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Hold current membership of STA (we can show you how to apply for this)
  • Hold the STA Safeguarding certificate (available online at www.sta.co.uk) or acceptable equivalent

Our Aquatic Training Academy is proud to run our first ever STA People with Disabilities qualification at the birthplace of the Paralympics – Stoke Mandeville Stadium. Come and experience this fantastic course at the place where in 1948 the Paralympic movement started. Take part in the learning on course with your tutor Helen Bull, who has first-hand experience in a wheelchair, but also whilst on course visit the National Paralympic Heritage Centre at the venue, take in all the memorabilia from Paralympics whilst on site and come away with the qualification to inspire the next generation.

STA Level 3 Award in Education and Training

This course is the first step for those wishing to take their experience and passion for swimming teaching to the next level, and is a pre-requisite for training to be an STA tutor or to deliver training for other awarding organisations. 

Over the 4 days of this course you will learn face to face and online, for an experienced STA tutor how to plan, deliver and evaluate tutoring along with theories behind teaching and all the knowledge needed to complete the course. 

This course will consist of some self-paced assignments and a 15min microteach video to be assessed. The face to face sessions and tutor support will help you achieve this Level 3 qualification and set you up to move onto the STA Aquatic Tutors Course. 

The pre-requisites for this course are:

  • Be at least 19 years old
  • Have a good understanding of ICT
  • Have the ability to read and communicate clearly and accurately in written and spoken English.

STA Aquatic Tutor

Train to be an STA Aquatic Tutor with MORE Swimming Aquatic Training Centre on this 4 day course. 

On successful completion you will become an STA Probationary Tutor in your speciality: 

  • Swimming Tutor - STA Tutors can deliver the STA Award in Teaching Swimming and STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming
  • Baby and Pre School Tutor
  • Disability Tutors
  • Open Water Tutor

The 4 day course will further the skills you learnt on your Level 3 Award in Education and training and specifically train you in delivering STA qualifications. 

The pre-requisites for this course are: 

  • Level 3 Award in Education and Training
  • Hold the STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming, STA Baby and Pre-School, STA Open Water or STA People with Disabilities (for a minimum of 2 years)
  • Knowledge of STA Teaching Swimming and Aquatic Teaching qualifications
  • Up to date knowledge of your specialty subject teaching methods and technical knowledge 
  • Hold a safeguarding children, vulnerable adults and young people certificate
  • Experience teaching in your specialty subject. 200 hours practical teaching hours within the last 5 years

On successful completion MORE Swimming Aquatic Training Centre can support you through your probationary conditions an offer work as an STA tutor with the opportunity to join our team of tutors.
