Stoke Mandeville Stadium's young wheelchair basketball players celebrate national success
Three young athletes from Stoke Mandeville Stadium’s weekly under-14 wheelchair basketball programme are celebrating after securing a bronze medal at this year’s Home Nations Cup.
Representing England South at the prestigious national competition in Nottingham, the players were instrumental in securing a third-place finish, with the team clinching a dramatic overtime victory thanks to a buzzer-beater.
The achievements highlight the impact of the weekly under-14 wheelchair basketball sessions held at our venue, which help young people develop their skills, build confidence, make friends and progress within the sport.
Adding to the celebrations, our staff member Josh Prickett represented England in the senior competition, helping the national team secure a gold medal.
Charlotte White, Health, Wellbeing and Inclusion Manager for our venue, who coaches the weekly U14 wheelchair basketball sessions, said:
“The success of these players shows what can be achieved through our junior wheelchair basketball programme. It highlights the dedication, determination and talent being developed within the club, as well as the positive impact that sport can have on young people. We want more people to discover wheelchair basketball, develop new skills and experience the sense of belonging, friendship and achievement that comes from being part of a team.
“Whether you're completely new to the sport or have played before, we'd love to welcome new players to our weekly sessions. Seeing our young athletes represent England South and return home with a national medal shows the opportunities that can come from getting involved in the programme.
“To also have Josh win gold with England’s senior team made it a truly memorable weekend for everyone involved.”
The weekly U14 wheelchair basketball sessions are open to children aged 10-14 and take place every Wednesday from 4:30pm till 6pm.
All abilities are welcome, equipment can be provided, and no previous experience is required.
