Riding life’s currents together - the swim group that’s built a lasting support network
What started as a handful of people sharing early morning swims at Sheppey Leisure Complex has become something much bigger – a supportive community that’s making a real difference to people’s lives.
Meeting regularly between 7 and 8am on weekdays, the group of around 15 swimmers have formed lasting friendships over the last two years. Together, they’ve created a space where people can stay active, have fun and support each other through life’s ups and downs.
Ranging in age from 40 to 76, the group includes both local Sheppey residents and those who now proudly call themselves “imports”. Despite their different backgrounds, they are united by a shared belief in the importance of wellbeing.
One of the swimmers, Natasha, said:
"Our swimming group brings me so much from friendship to support. Not only do I come each week for my own personal fitness journey, but also all the friends I have made...it brightens up my week!”
And then there’s this from another regular attendee, Jeanette:
"Through swimming I have met some lovely people that I wouldn't have known, and the added bonus is I'm keeping fit!”
The welcoming atmosphere at the pool has been key to the group’s success, with staff praised for their kindness, encouragement and support.
The connections extend beyond the water too, with group members now organising social events – including a recent boat trip to Southend, which was sparked by a casual conversation mid-swim. Trip organiser, Keith Russell said:
“I came up with the idea one morning during my swim. A boat trip from Sheppey runs regularly to Southend, and I thought it’d be a great day out for the group. I took the trip a few years ago, and really enjoyed it.
“Thanks to the swimming group, we’ve all become good friends, helping and supporting each other with all of the challenges we face in 2026, even when we’re away from our pool. We also like to laugh and have fun, while staying active. We always say we feel much better after our swims than before!”
Gareth Gates, our Facilities Manager, added:
“Keith and our other swimmers have created something quite special. A group that not only brings wellbeing benefits, but forms social connections that help the participants when they’re away from the pool. Those bonds of friendship are just as important as their regular workouts, and are one of the key reasons leisure facilities like ours are so important to local communities.”
From fitness and fun to friendship and support, there's something for everyone at our centre.
