Fitness instructor takes on sponsored challenge following second cancer diagnosis

News

Our fitness instructor is turning his cancer recovery journey into a powerful fundraising and awareness campaign by taking on a sponsored weight loss cycling challenge in support of Milton Keynes Prostate Cancer Support (MKPCS).

In April this year, 64-year-old Robin Gandy was diagnosed with Stage 1 prostate cancer. But this is not the first time he has battled a variant of the disease, as back in 2006, he was diagnosed with renal cancer, which resulted in surgery to remove his left kidney.

Twenty years later, he is once again facing up to cancer - with determination and a desire to help others.

To raise awareness and vital funds, Robin will undertake a sponsored cycling challenge while documenting his weight-loss journey. The challenge will run through the summer and conclude on August 20th, his 65th birthday.

Robin said:

“Having faced cancer twice, I understand how important support, awareness and early diagnosis can be. Through this challenge, I hope to encourage more men to talk about prostate health, get checked when needed and support the incredible work carried out by Milton Keynes Prostate Cancer Support.

“Don’t let the diagnosis of prostate cancer ruin your life. We can improve our quality of life by getting fitter cardiovascularly (cardiac and lung health) and musculoskeletarly (weight and strength training). If in doubt go and get tested. MK Prostate Cancer Support group are available and always on hand to help with this.”

Prostate cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, with approximately one in eight receiving a diagnosis during their lifetime.

Kat Samuel, Health and Fitness Manager for our centre, said:

"Robin's positivity, resilience and commitment to helping others is truly inspiring. We are proud to support his challenge and help shine a spotlight on the importance of prostate cancer awareness and early diagnosis. We hope Robin's story encourages more conversations around men's health and supports the vital work of Milton Keynes Prostate Cancer Support."

You can support Robin's fundraising efforts through his JustGiving page, helping Milton Keynes Prostate Cancer Support continue its important work supporting local people affected by prostate cancer.
